Aim sideways and up

We often describe people as digging themselves into a hole when we mean they are getting themselves into trouble. The next relevant saying is that people are digging themselves into a deeper hole when their efforts to fix their problem are getting them in worse trouble. More of the same is not what's needed. You probably need someone to help you. But what if no one is coming with a rope and Lassie will not be bringing the Sheriff to help you?

You can dig yourself out of a hole, even if the earth around you is too crumbly to make a tunnel. Just dig sideways and a wee bit up, create a lot of mini-landslides, and use the extra earth to fill as much of the hole you are in as you can.
